...On Reagan's Legacy

In 1961, CPUC Commissioner Bill Bennett (not the right wing extremist) once told me that if Ronald Reagan ever attained office as Governor, it would be a dark day for California. Years later, I got to thinking that Bill was right. The Teflon Governor/President could get people to follow a muck cart and believe it was a wedding! Aside from closing mental hospitals in California, Ronnie Baby (who called the USSR The Evil Empire) did all he could to undermine the safety nets of the poor while promoting corporate communism. Frinstance: $500 Million in a gift from Uncle Sam to that famous Scottish restaurant, McDonald's to promote its burgers overseas. Worry not about the inordinate profits of McBurgers or the low wages they pay exploited employees.

Thanks to Ronnie Reagan's "De-Regulation" of everything from Broadcasting to Airlines, we now have hour-long commercials interrupted by thirty seconds of program. We have airliners dropping out of the skies because their CEOs wouldn't fix the screws which kept them aloft. Instead, they preferred to spend their money on religionist tracts served to captive passengers with every meal. The War on Drugs. Sounds great. Sounds like we are DOING SOMETHING about drug abuse, doesn't it. Don't look now, but have you noticed how the Drug Companies are pushing more drugs in TV ads? Let us not look at the dumping of drugs into Mexico by these companies, and certainly, as they mumble through the lists of "side effects" in print one cannot read, who are we to question drug safety?

Some Republicans have proposed that Ronnie Reagan's visage be placed on Mount Rushmore. They say they will pay for it. That is sort of like putting a Coca-Cola sign on the Mona Lisa. Somehow, though, as absurd as the Republicans' offer may sound, it actually may be appropriate. I can see it now: Ronald Reagan's visage peering out from Mt. Rushmore, a neon sign flashing away with the message "Bought and paid for by General Electric" I can hardly wait.
